As Ben Franklin left Independence Hall at the close of the Constitutional Convention of 1787, a woman asked, “Well, Doctor, what have we got—a Republic or a Monarchy?”
Franklin famously replied, “A Republic, if you can keep it.”
Less than 300 years later, our Republic is being torn apart by factions that have threatened self-governance throughout history – concentrated wealth, oligarchy and the autocrats that exploit it.
In their 56th episode, Tara fills Sherri in on some of the history of the late Roman Republic that declined into authoritarianism and wonder whether historians in the future will refer to this period as “the Late American Republican.” As we endure the authoritarian fascist Trump, his willfully ignorant supporters and the establishment that props him up in order to continue concentrating wealth and power in the hands of the few, we can’t help but think about the fate of our Republic. Can we can keep it?
